    SIPOC Diagram

A SIPOC Diagram is a high-level process mapping framework used to identify Suppliers, Inputs, Processes, Outputs, and Customers within a business workflow.

Also known as: SIPOC Model, SIPOC Framework, Process SIPOC Diagram

    Full Definition

A SIPOC Diagram is a business process analysis and process improvement tool used to visualize the key components of a process before detailed workflow mapping begins. SIPOC stands for Suppliers, Inputs, Process, Outputs, and Customers. The framework helps organizations understand process boundaries, stakeholder relationships, operational dependencies, and value delivery. SIPOC Diagrams are widely used in business analysis, Lean Six Sigma, process optimization, quality management, and digital transformation initiatives to improve communication, streamline workflows, and identify process improvement opportunities.

    Five Components

    • Suppliers - Individuals, systems, or entities providing inputs required for the process.
    • Inputs - Resources, materials, information, or data necessary to execute the process.
    • Process - The sequence of activities or workflow steps performed to create outputs.
    • Outputs - Products, services, results, or deliverables generated by the process.
    • Customers - Internal or external recipients who receive or use the process outputs.

    Common Mistakes to Avoid

    • Creating overly detailed SIPOC diagrams instead of maintaining a high-level overview.
    • Ignoring customer requirements during process analysis.
    • Defining unclear process boundaries and scope.
    • Failing to involve stakeholders during process mapping.
    • Using SIPOC diagrams without identifying process improvement opportunities.
