Stakeholder Analysis
The process of identifying all individuals and groups who have an interest in or are affected by a project, understanding their needs and concerns, and planning appropriate engagement strategies.
Full Definition
Stakeholder analysis is one of the first activities in any BA engagement and one of the most impactful. Missing key stakeholders early leads to requirements gaps discovered late — the most expensive type of rework. A thorough stakeholder analysis maps influence levels, identifies competing interests, surfaces hidden blockers, and enables a communication plan that builds buy-in throughout the project lifecycle.
Tools & Techniques
Power-Interest Grid
Plots stakeholders on a 2×2 matrix of power (ability to influence the project) vs interest (level of concern in the outcome). Determines engagement strategy: manage closely, keep satisfied, keep informed, or monitor.
RACI Matrix
Assigns Responsible, Accountable, Consulted, and Informed roles for each project activity or decision. Eliminates ambiguity about who owns what.
Stakeholder Register
A structured document listing each stakeholder, their role, influence level, key concerns, communication preferences, and engagement status.
